Finding Online Courses

  1. Visit atlas.emory.edu
  2. On the "Search Classes" form, be sure to choose the correct options for
    1. Term
    2. Campus
    3. Career
  3. Search results will show all available courses.  Additionally, the class notes will confirm  that "This is an online course."

We encourage you to utilize the enrollment and waitlist functions as this will help us determine student demand for particular courses as we move forward.

Student Enrollment

Fall & Spring Terms

Emory Students

Students may enroll in online and in-person courses as long as the meeting times do not conflict.

Oxford Students

Students should speak with an Oxford academic advisor for permission to enroll in an Emory College course.

Education Abroad Students

Students participating in Education Abroad programs are not typically permitted to enroll concurrently in an Emory College online course. Students seeking to discuss their situation should consult with the Office of International and Summer Programs.

Summer Term

Emory and Oxford Students

Students may enroll in both an online course and a course offered on campus as long as the class meeting times do not conflict.

Transient Students

Transient (non-degree seeking students from other institutions) who wish to enroll in courses in Emory College of Arts and Sciences during the summer must apply and be admitted as a transient student. Transient students must complete and submit the online Emory Transient Study Application.

Education Abroad Students

Students participating in a Summer Abroad program may enroll in an online course if the dates of the online course do not overlap with their summer study abroad program dates. Students are not allowed to take an online course while they are out of the country on a Summer Abroad program.

Technology Requirements

Our online courses utilize the Canvas platform and Zoom Video Conferencing for synchronous (live) sessions. Students should have the following technology available when taking our online courses.

  • An Apple or Windows laptop or desktop computer. Tablets, smartphones, and devices running other operating systems are not recommended.
  • A built-in or external webcam and headset with microphone; most earbuds works fine.
  • A reliable, high-speed internet connection; a dial-up connection is not sufficient.

Online Discussion Boards Participation

Dos
  • Check grammar and spelling before posting on online discussion boards.
  • Make sure to credit others by citing your sources.
  • Choose standard fonts that are optimized for online reading (i.e. sans serif) and font sizes that are easily readable (i.e. size 12 and 14).
  • Be concise.
Don’ts
  • Avoid using sarcasm. The message can often come across as rude or offensive.
  • Avoid writing in all-caps. It can easily be misinterpreted as yelling.
  • Avoid using profanity or offensive language.
  • Avoid sharing private or sensitive information.
  • Avoid using slang or emoticons.

Synchronous Class Meeting

  • Please have your video on whenever it is possible. If you experience internet issues (e.g. low bandwidth), please communicate with your instructor in a timely manner.
  • Check your browsers and documents before sharing your screen to avoid sharing contents that are inappropriate for class.
  • Use virtual backgrounds to protect your privacy.
  • Dress appropriately as you would in a face-to-face class.
  • In large classes, use the mute function when you are not talking.
  • Practice turn-taking. Wait until another person finishes to start talking.

Class Meeting Requirements

  • The listed class times in OPUS are required synchronous meeting times. These synchronous sessions are not available at alternate times. All course times are listed in Eastern Standard Time, EST.
  • Students are expected to be fully focused and engaged during class meetings, just as they would be in an in-person classroom setting.
  • Each course will require students to access additional course material asynchronously. During the summer, students should expect to spend a total of 15-20 hours per week on the course.

Before the first class meeting

  • Your instuctor will contact you prior to the first class meeting to provide a Zoom link and any other details you need to know
  • The course Canvas site should be accessible to you prior to the first class meeting and will also have the Zoom link for synchronous sessions.
